This month we look at The Battle Of Imposters.

There are many similarities between the assignment Moses was given to free the Israelites and the assignment we have as believers in the marketplace. Just like the Israelites in Egypt, many believers exist in a state of slavery in their workplace. So much so that many of us have accepted the dysfunction as the norm because it’s all we’ve ever known. 

Mind Renewal

The first point of enslavement is our minds – our understanding of what is and what can be. Where did your education about your work come from? Was that knowledge you received inspired by God or the world? There is such a thing as human wisdom and it wouldn’t be called wisdom if it wasn’t so. But there’s a higher dimension of wisdom – divine wisdom. 

Many of us have tons of human wisdom concerning our workplaces. We wouldn’t do the work we do if we didn’t have some semblance of knowledge about it. But how many of us have received divine revelation and insight about our work? How many of us know God’s heart and mind for our professions? How He wants to use our professional abilities to institute His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven? 

God had to free Moses from the mentality he had as an Israelite raised as an Egyptian before He could use him to free the Israelites. We must be freed from our Egyptian mentalities before God can use us. It begins by acknowledging that maybe we don’t know all there is to know. 

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Imposter Syndrome

With the renewal of our minds comes the realization that our careers and businesses aren’t just a means to earn a living and occupy our days. God has a bigger agenda and He wants us to partner with Him to fulfil it. It often means confronting the Pharaohs of our day. But many of us have excuses a mile long why God can’t use us just like Moses did. The commonly used term is imposter syndrome, which many of us are far too comfortable with.

I’ve never believed that the imposter syndrome is something to be lived with. It’s deception plain and simple. Lies about who you are and who you’re not. Root them out and plant the truth of God concerning you in their place. It takes as much effort to baby your imposter syndrome as it will to grow God’s word about you. Why not grow what gives you life instead of entertaining your death? 

If you’re wondering how you can partner with God at work, I’ll ask you the same question God asked Moses – what’s in your hand? For Moses it was a rod that served as a tool of his trade at the time – shepherding. He had spent years in the wilderness training in its expected use. But God wanted to introduce him to an extraordinary use of this same stick. Something miraculous happens when God breathes on things. What was nothing more than a plain and ordinary stick became the instrument of a nation’s freedom. 

What’s in your hand? Have you dismissed it because you thought it was far too ordinary to do anything beyond the norm? One of the hurdles we have to overcome is wanting what’s in someone else’s hand because we think it’s a better, shinier tool. Instead of longing for someone else’s gift and ability why don’t you allow God to breathe on yours? Be diligent in training on its use. Become excellent at your craft. Lay it and yourself at God’s feet and see Him move. 

Aaron & Magicians 

Every Moses has an Aaron – someone God has assigned to work alongside them to fulfil their divine assignment. As believers in the workplace, we must learn to differentiate between competitors and co-labourers. The mentality that the only way for me to succeed is for you to fail doesn’t represent the heart and mind of God for the marketplace. If we are both pursuing God’s agenda then my effort should complement yours and vice versa. The marketplace would look remarkably different if believers acknowledged we’re on the same team. Our fight is with the kingdom that is contrary to God’s agenda, not with one another. 

Every Moses also has magicians assigned to him – people influenced by the enemy’s agenda to counter what God has called you to do. But just like Moses’ snake swallowed up all the rest, whatever God has given you to do will have dominion over every imposter that tries to take its place. Remember, your fight is not with people bound by deception. If anything, they could be part of those God has called you to free. Our fight is with the father of lies.

We typically think of imposters as an external factors. Yet the best imposter of you out there… could be you. Think about it. If you’re building a career or a business in a way that God didn’t configure you to, then aren’t you living a lie? Your life may be good, successful even. But if it isn’t what God placed you on this earth to do then your current existence is an imposter of your God-ordained life. 

What many of us are part of at work are corrupted versions of what God intended our industries to be. For anything to be corrupted, an original must first exist. There is no industry that exists outside of God. We have to understand the original intent God had for the industries we’re part of so we can reconcile them back to Him. We can’t fix what’s wrong if we don’t know how things are supposed to work. I always recommend 7 Professional Nations: Reconciling Them Back To God by Niyi Morakinyo  as a good place to start for anyone who’s serious about bringing transformation through their work/business. I also did a series on 7 Gates of Society based on my musings on the book.

Go back to the beginning. Back to when God made you. Back to when He conceived your profession. He’s waiting for you there. To introduce you to yourself and your career. So you and Him can change the nations.
