It’s no longer business as usual for the world and certainly not for the Body of Christ. The days of sitting by the sidelines are coming to an end. Our focus on the blog this year will be on some of the battles we will have to contend with this decade as Christians.
The universe began with words spoken by our Creator. This is the genesis of our existence. It’s also our blueprint as people who are made in His image and likeness.
Our words have the ability to create.
The battle of words requires us to acknowledge the creative power of our words – spoken and unspoken.
When you speak, you create life in various forms. If you share a business idea, it’s the first step in making it a reality. If you give encouragement to a colleague, it creates hope in them.
However, this power to create life doesn’t start when we share the words. It begins right from the moment those words start running through our minds and hearts.
To think on things that make you bitter, creates bitterness. To think on that which brings you joy, creates joy. To think you are inadequate at work, creates the very inadequacy you strive to run from.
It’s ironic. We look at the outcome of our thoughts as proof that what we think of ourselves and others must be true. Yet those thoughts aren’t necessarily proof, but seed. The seed which begets the reality we see. A fleeting thought – whether good or bad – never quite has the chance to take root and bear fruit. But a thought that is dwelt upon – over and over – can easily become a pillar in our worldview.
As a man thinketh so is he. Who have you become as a result of your thoughts?
It’s vital to note that there’s a thin but crucial line between manifestation and faith. Manifestation relies on the power of self. Faith acknowledges the role of self but depends on the power of God. It’s the difference between deifying self and enthroning God.

Our words have the ability to destroy.
The battle of words requires us to acknowledge the destructive power of our words – spoken and unspoken.
We expect poison to look and sound like poison yet it rarely does. When we spend more time consuming the world than the Word, we’re taking poison without realising it. How so? The world often speaks in contradiction to God’s word. Those contradictions quickly become the cares of life that choke the word of God planted in our hearts.
When God speaks to you, the last place you should be looking for verification is the world.
If you spend more time following the latest business news and trends than listening to what God has to say about your industry, you’ll end up in turmoil.
If you trust the voice of industry experts and mentors more than the voice of God, there will come a time when they will inadvertently lead you astray.
This isn’t to say that we neglect to keep ourselves informed or forsake the counsel of others. It’s a call to understand the source of what we’re consuming and the motive that drives them. Anything we consume needs to be tested and weighed on the scales of God’s word for our careers and businesses.
Additionally, when to speak is just as important as what you speak. The power of words lies in the timing of their release. You can have the best of intentions but if you get your timing wrong, what was meant to bring life can easily cause destruction instead.
Destruction isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes there are things that we need to put an end to with our words. As such, the power of our no must be as resounding the power of our yes. Anything that is contrary to the will of God for our work must not find expression in our lives. Not just the overtly bad things but even the good things.
The “good” business deal that will take you away from the path God has you on. The “good” promotion at work when God is calling you to something else entirely. The business partnership that requires you sacrifice the blueprint God gave you for the business. If God hasn’t stamped it as good, then you’re better off forsaking it for your own good.

Our silence makes all the difference.
Lastly, the battle of words requires us to acknowledge the significance of our silence.
There will be times when wisdom requires our silence when ego demands we speak.
There will be times when courage demands we speak when fear ties to coerce us into silence.
Only when we are Spirit-led can we know the difference for no two situations are ever the same. Even if the circumstances and parties involved are similar.
We live in an age where we’re inundated by words. From the moment we wake up to when we sleep we consume and release an abundance of life and death with our words and our silence.
So choose wisely. What to consume. What to meditate on. What to share and when to do so. When to be silent. The life of your career and business depends on it.
